The dial-up configuration can be saved in Windows 98 with the Windows Explorer by dragging the connection in My Computer, Dial-up Networking to a folder or floppy, which will create a .dun file.  In Windows Me click Start, Settings, Dial-up Networking, Select the connection, and go to the Main menu, Edit, and select Copy to a Folder...  Also, copy any .pwl files in the C:Windows directory.  They contain passwords for the various users of the computer.  This is handy for saving these settings to a scratch drive or floppy so they can be restored after doing a clean install of Windows.  Simply login as the same user and drag them back after the install.  It is good idea to have all of this data and info on your MODEM on paper as well before destroying it.  That may save you some time and phone calls if things go wrong.
